Things we love: Camp

Growing up I went to camp almost every year. First through fifth grades I went for a week at a time. Several years after that I went to a month long girls camp near Chattanooga. It was beautiful, fun, peaceful and good for the soul. If you never went to camp, I feel really sorry for you.

Almost every year of my childhood I also went on some sort of retreat through church programs. Family retreats and youth retreats at different places. We went to family camp at the camp ground I went to the week long summer camp. That place holds a special place in my heart.

What is it about camp grounds that totally soothes my soul? I’m not really a rustic, campy person. But every fall, when the nights get cooler and the leaves change colors, I yearn for camp fires, cabins with mesh windows, and uncomfortable bunk beds.

When I saw the Letter Cottage post earlier this week I just about died. I still haven’t stopped thinking about it. I even pulled it up and showed Bryan. I want to go to there so bad. Here are a few pics:

And here are a few pins that invoke the feelings I have about camps and retreats:

  2. It’s so funny that you posted about this because I’ve had a bout of camp nostalgia for a couple weeks now! I never went to camp until my junior year of high school when I went for a week to a church camp. The first couple of days I was miserably homesick and hated all the ridiculous games they made us play, but after I got over feeling embarrassed, I had a lot of fun and loved being away for a week with my friends. And the surroundings were beautiful! That is something I love to look back on, and I wish I could go back. I’m not a very rustic person either (like camping in tents pushes my limit), but I love a cozy, possibly slightly uncomfortable cabin nestled in trees and near a lake. The feeling of unplugging from everything in daily life (literally and figuratively) and just enjoying simple pleasures is unbeatable, and I wish I took more time to do things like that, whether it’s for a weekend or a week.
